Greylights III

About this work

The series of drawings “Greylights” are the result of a constant interaction between appearance and disappearance of surface and colors. Using color pencils to create stifling compositions, shapes and dimensions, Melanie Berger returns to them by erasing some layers, then drawing again to eventually restore a smooth surface. The artist constantly repeats the same movements – adding, erasing, adding again, erasing again,…until a unity eventually appears from the drawing.

Melanie Berger View biography
"What I look for in my drawings is, more than volume itself, this almost imperceptible interaction between firmness and loosening". The surface of a drawing and its relationship to space is at the core of Melanie Berger’s artistic approach.
